Scarlett Forfeits Fashion Challenge?

February 29, 2008

After two thrilling red carpet battles between The Other Boleyn Girl ingenues Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman, we are wondering, did front-runner ScarJo drop out of the race? Two New York screenings, two no-shows for the 23-year-old actress, who, despite a small slipup on February 19 at the film’s London premiere, was favored to put the style smackdown on co-star Natalie, 26. That is until she seemingly forfeited the title, leaving us only to pit Nat against Nat (surprise: Nat wins!). With the movie being released tomorrow (we might have seen ads for it… somewhere), will Scarlett get another chance to win the Fashion Face-Off crown? Or does Natalie deserve the win, based on the two looks above?

Kate Talks Fashion and Friendship to Elle UK

February 29, 2008

After being crowned an official Style Icon earlier this month at the Elle UK Style Awards, Kate Hudson is on the cover of the magazine’s April issue. Hot stuff, right? Naturally, Elle UK asked about her thoughts on fashion, but Kate also opened up to them about the unusual relationship she shares with her ex-husband, Chris Robinson, and her desire to wear as little clothing as possible. Sassy, too. Here’s more:
On her own personal style: “I love clothes! But I would never put something on just because it’s high fashion. . . I like people to have personal style. . . I’m not into the trampy look. I like to mismatch. I like a look that is not too thought out!”
On keeping in shape: “I’ve always been a dancer. I took ballet from the age of three to 13, then got into jazz dance. Now I have a dance instructor several times a week and I do Pilates.”
On showing off her figure: “I plan to wear as little as possible for as long as I can. . . I know I won’t have this body forever, she says. and I would like to have another child some day.”To see what Kate says about her feelings for Chris, body image and what she’ll be wearing this Spring just read more
On her relationship with Chris: “The other day I told someone my husband was coming over and they said, ‘You mean your ex-husband’. I do love my ex. Whatever man I end up with, I’ll always love Chris.”
On her body image: “If there’s one thing I’ve learnt this year, it’s not to think too much about my image. I don’t dress for anyone but me and the people I love.”
On what she’ll be wearing this Spring: “Right now I’m in love with colour! Particularly purple. I just bought a purple Dolce sweater. The other color I love for spring is cobalt blue. And that peachy skin-tone colour.”

Kate and Chris seem like super sweet exes, which must make little Ryder happy (and, you know, not that it matters but if she was pregnant he would so get my vote for dad). I also heart cobalt blue. Wonder what Elle UK would have to say about Kate’s recent love for baggy is-she-or-isn’t-she casual wear?

Hayden Panettiere - Seventeen Magazine - April 2008

February 29, 2008

Hayden Panettiere dishes in the April issue of Seventeen magazine about her life and wanting to save the world. The Heroes hottie talks about her fight against whalers in Japan, why voting matters and her very personal crusade to find the right guy!Enjoy some interview snippets:

On breaking up with Stephen Colletti:
“I just knew I wanted to breathe. I wanted to be single at the time. It just hit me like a ton of bricks: This is the time I need to be with myself. It takes such a secure person to be with someone like me—it takes so much confidence; it takes so much trust.”

On wanting to be girly and just have fun:
“If I was a wonderful person, I’d run around in whatever clothes and have one outfit – and then I’d donate the rest of the money to charity. But no one is perfect, and no one is saying you have to give up everything in your life to change the world.”

On what it was like fighting whalers in Japan:
“It was great! There’s very little that scares me. I’ve always been a physical person. And I feel like a lot of time in this industry, a lot of people loan their face to a cause, which is great, but it doesn’t do as much as getting out there and actually physically doing something.”

Monochrome Lagerfeld reveals long skirts, tailoring

February 29, 2008

As the rain cleared and the sun came out over Paris, the mood on the catwalk turned black. Karl Lagerfeld, the maestro of French fashion and the designer behind Chanel, sent out models for his own name label in monochrome, mannish tailoring for fall 2008 with only a single flash of colour in the red lining of a coat.

Top model Irina Lazareanu, on-off muse of British Babyshambles singer Pete Doherty, led the line up down the runway of long fitted skirts with high waists or short skirts kicked up with toile.

The falling hemlines, particularly of high-waisted body-hugging black shirts, prompted speculation Lagerfeld was succumbing to the darkening mood in the global economy.

Dolce & Gabbana give twist to tartan

February 29, 2008

Italian designers Dolce & Gabbana have tried out an unusually demure tweed-and-tartan look for womenswear, but couldn’t resist giving each outfit a twist in silver shoes or poodle-fur style jackets. The checks were a more sombre, grown-up version of the red and black tartans seen at the designers’ more informal D&G line on Monday, in muted greys, blacks and mulberry.Ample skirts were down to mid-calf and trousers were straight. The designers used jumbo cord for some outfits in chestnut and caramel for a conservative, country air. The designers, once best known for their sexy, leopard print looks, even used Grace Kelly-style silk scarves tied at the neck, or gracing a handbag strap. Flat caps and skinny rib jumpers added to the no-nonsense mood. Light touches came in silver sparkle high-heeled shoes, worn with an iron grey three-piece trouser suit, or a long waistcoat of poodle-fur fabric over a muted check mid-calf dress.

Anna Wintour , Carine Roitfeld Feud Heats up?

February 29, 2008

Fashion gossips claim Anna Wintour is not happy with Carine Roitfeld. The editor in chief of Vogue was reportedly ruffled by a profile of Carine Roitfeld in New York magazine that carried the title “The Anti-Anna” and had Roitfeld commenting: “It is very difficult not to become a puppet,” Roitfeld is quoted as saying. “Like Anna, she becomes so iconic that she becomes like a puppet. I don’t want to be like that, I don’t want to wear this uniform, I don’t want to be just an envelope.”Asked about the article, Wintour replied, “Maybe you should ask Carine,” adding, “I have no comment.”

Roitfeld said Wintour is “right to be upset” and charged that the writer, Amy Larocca, misinterpreted her remarks.

Young designer aims to make Ungaro ‘cool’

February 28, 2008

Esteban Cortazar, the 23-year-old Colombian designer with the task of breathing life into the established house of Emanuel Ungaro, has only one aim this Paris Fashion Week: to make the label “more cool”. Cortazar’s first collection for Ungaro, a red carpet favourite of Kylie Minogue and Penelope Cruz, is among the most anticipated events of the fall and winter 2008 collections.”I have a new vision, a fresher attitude. It’s what the house needs,” Cortazar said in an interview ahead of his Wednesday show at an atelier surrounded by mannequins. The Bogota-born, Miami-raised son of an artist and a jazz singer made his unofficial debut in fashion when he was just 15 years old, designing for Miami International Fashion Week.

Already acclaimed by the industry, Cortazar’s own collection of glamorous gowns with a Latin influence was snapped up early by powerful US department store Bloomingdale’s.

But is he stressed by the pressure to perform in Paris, the world’s premier fashion event?

“The younger you are, the less pressure there is,” he said. “And nervousness is a good thing, it makes you more creative.”

New faces at old houses have been a feature of this fashion season, reaching its end in Paris after New York, London and Milan. But it has not always been easy for unknowns to take over from the greats.

Gianfranco Ferre, whose eponymous designer died suddenly last year, showed an uneven collection in Milan last week after the designer assigned to take over, Lars Nilsson, quit a month before the shows because of “creative differences”.

Another closely watched show this week is Valentino, where Alessandra Fachinetti will parade her first designs since replacing the Valentino Garavani. She was abruptly ejected from Gucci after just two seasons when she failed to fill the shoes of Tom Ford.

Seasoned fashion executives say an ability to spot a brand’s heritage and reproduce it with an eye to what the consumer wants can be even more important than ego and talent when it comes to taking the place of an illustrious predecessor.

Cortazar was chosen last year by Mounir Mouffarige, group president of Emanuel Ungaro, who was “seduced by his youth and his level of maturity”.

“His mission is to make the label more exciting, more cool,” Mouffarige said. “He must be daring.”

Mouffarige has a history of success in introducing untried young talents into the best known design houses. In 1997, he shocked the fashion world by putting the untested Stella McCartney in at Chloe, replacing Karl Lagerfeld, who went on to great acclaim.

But at Ungaro it has been a more difficult task. Since the eponymous designer retired in 2004, the house has been through four stylists as it struggled to find one able to channel its traditional look of long draped dresses and curvaceous lines.
