Fashion Economy
A crisp Monday afternoon, I am in Primark’s flagship store on London’s Oxford Street and you would think it was five minutes before closing time on Christmas Eve.The place is heaving. Shoppers - of all nationalities and ages - are literally stuffing armfuls of what initially seems like so much colourful, synthetic tat into their baskets. No one is bothering to join the queue for the changing rooms: women are stripping off in front of me. People are shoving each other and clothes are being trampled on. Enamoured as I am of the tranquil surroundings of Prada and Gucci, this place seems like shopping hell. Despite all the signs overhead saying Atmosphere, there is none. Not even any piped music.
