“Elle” February 2009: Kate Hudson

January 5, 2009

In the featured article, we learn that Jennifer Meyer, the jewelry designer and wife of Tobey Maguire, has known Kate since childhood (her dad was the agent of Kate’s mom, Goldie Hawn). In high school, Jennifer recalls Kate getting sent home for wearing her skirts too short. Scandalous!

Kate also sounds off on the paparazzi enraging her.

“They’ve become an entity to themselves,” she says. “But eventually they’ll implode. They’re creating a house of cards that will inevitably fall. These are not nice people. When you’re taking your child to school, and they’re trying to get on school property to get a picture, it literally makes you want to just smack them.”

During the interview, the 29-year-old actress gets defensive at the suggestion that she lacks range.

She says,

“I could be in an interview and people would keep going, ‘So why do you always do romantic comedies?’ Do I want to do darker roles? Of course. It has to be the right thing, though. I’m not just going to, like, make a movie that’s, Oh, she’s a whore, prostitute, and heroin addict.”

Kate’s next rom-com, Bride Wars, costars Anne Hathaway and opens next Friday, January 9.

Ecco Domani Names Award Winners

January 5, 2009

Ecco Domani released the 2009 vintage of the winemaker’s eighth annual Fashion Foundation awards.

The recipients are Lyn Devon, Matthew Ames, Cushnie et Ochs by Carly Cushnie and Michelle Ochs, and Ohne Titel by Alexa Adams and Flora Gill in the women’s design category. Corpus, by Jerrod Cornish and Keith Richardson, was honored for men’s design, and jeweler Monique Péan won for accessories.

The foundation’s inaugural award for sustainable design went to Bodkin Brooklyn designers Eviana Hartman and Samantha Pleet, who create bags out of old leather jackets.

Each emerging label received a $25,000 grant to help showcase its collection at New York Fashion Week in February. The form of showcase is uncertain, as the cost of a runway show generally exceeds the cash value of the prize, and the Council of Fashion Designers of America has urged emerging designers to consider presentations this season.

Kate Moss’ Thailand Vacation

January 5, 2009

Kate Moss continues her holiday vacation in Thailand with boyfriend Jamie Hince, daughter Lila Grace and friends on Surin Beach on Sunday. It appears the supermodel has recently suffered an injury to her right hand as it is bandaged up. It also seems Miss Moss left her bikini top at home as her breast is clearly exposed out the side of her dress.

Meanwhile, she insists she isn’t pregnant, and the beer in her hand would appear to confirm that fact, but the way she was rubbing what appeared to be a bump beneath her baggy top did nothing to dispel rumours that Kate is, indeed, expecting her second child.

M&S reveals scars of high street slump

January 5, 2009

Marks & Spencer is this week expected to report its worst Christmas sales figures since Sir Stuart Rose took the helm after what has been a bloody trading period for retailers.Next and Debenhams are also expected to report sales declines in their January updates but analysts think that like-for-like falls will be most marked at M&S, with sales down by at least 5.5% in the third quarter. Some fear that the decline could be as steep as 9.6 per cent.

If underlying sales are down more than 6.3%, that would be M&S’s worst quarterly performance since 1999.

Karl Lagerfeld defends fur industry

January 5, 2009

The Chanel supremo said it was “childish” to even discuss the issue of wearing fur in a world where eating meat was normal.

German-born Lagerfeld, 75, a contemporary of the late Yves Saint Laurent, said that he did not himself wear fur. But he defended the practice, saying there was “an industry who lives from that”.

Hunters in the north “make a living having learnt nothing else than hunting”, he said, “killing those beasts who would kill us if they could.”

Animals should be killed “nicely” if at all possible, said Lagerfeld, who admitted to being queasy about eating meat.

“I can hardly eat meat because it has to look like something what it was not when it was alive,” he said.

He concluded: “In a meat-eating world, wearing leather for shoes and clothes and even handbags, the discussion of fur is childish.”

In an interview on the Radio 4 Today programme, Lagerfeld also said the issue of size zero models was insignificant compared to the “zillions” of fat people.

Doctors have criticised the use of size zero models, saying it has contributed to a rise in eating disorders among girls who feel pressured to conform to this idea of beauty.

David Beckham Stars in New Adidas Originals Campaign

January 5, 2009

Let’s take a break from talking about people not spending money and turn to those who are basically blowing bills out the door with a fan. Adidas is launching its first global ad campaign in 60 years for Adidas Originals, starring David Beckham, Missy Elliott, and Russell Simmons. Originals is the brand’s fashion-y line of athleticwear. The ads show people dancing at a crowded party. “The campaign and the people that are in it are on point with [teens’] needs,” says the U.S. marketing director for Adidas. So apparently the needs of twentysomethings who prefer David Beckham without his shirt have gone unnoticed.

Is Agyness Deyn unfashionable in NY?

January 1, 2009

Is Agyness Deyn unfashionable in NY? One of the hottest models of 2008 and a trend setter of note has stepped out of favor with the press and fans alike. In fact the DailyMail has dubbed her ‘Cruella De Vil’ and describe the 25 year old model as “Taking a leaf out of Cruella De Vil’s fashion book, Agyness opted for a white fur coat - reminiscent of the 101 Dalmatians.” Ouch, not a good comparison for anyone really, the vogue cover girl, recently moved home with her boyfriend Albert Hammons, 28 (Strokes) and seems to have settled into her new place as she walked her pet chihuahua and Dachshund. The couple are rumoured to be engaged after she was photographed wearing a ring on her wedding finger earlier this year.Agyness recently came under fire for posing in a fur coat when leaving a Christmas bash at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. Which is rather ironic as she was later pictured wearing an anti-fur sticker on her top. Agyness’s story is a real rags to riches tale as the once former fish and chip employee is now described as the ‘ultimate incarnation of the it-girl’ which has lead to her meteoric rise to fame. What are your thoughts? Do you think her to be  androgynous but sexy and versatility, or just plain tom boyish?
