‘Let’s see you without your…’

June 9, 2009

Established model, Sara Ziff, has exposed the exploitation and sleaze behind the industry’s glamorous façade in a homemade documentary Picture Me: The Truth About Modelling that is proving to be the unexpected hit of this year’s film festivals. Shot over a period of five years, top model Sara Ziff’s tell all documentary on the fashion industry reveals a “predatory environment” full of middle-aged men circling like sharks around under-age and vulnerable girls. Kate Moss covers New York magazine S/S 2009

February 17, 2009

Say what you want about Miss Moss - yes, my fashion consciousness was formed in the 90s - but she sure can turn it out. Look. At. That. Face.

She discusses her latest ventures, designing for Topshop and pregnancy rumours in this New York magazine feature.

Some highlights?

Kate on designing:

I’m not a designer. I’ve never been to school or been trained. I can’t draw a dress, really. But I know what I like.

On her attitude to clothes:

I love clothes. I know how clothes should fit and feel. When I would go to shoots, stylists would say to me, “You really should do something. You should take it another step.” But it never felt right until I met Philip and the whole atmosphere of Topshop.

On her newfound boobage:

I am a woman now! It’s true. No, honestly, I’ve never worn a bra in my life. Ever! It’s so awful, even my friends are phoning me up and saying “Are you pregnant?” And I’m like, “No! I just put on a couple of pounds, and they went in the right place.” Isn’t that weird? And how perfect for lingerie.Story Covered by:sistagirlfriend

Marc Jacobs Fall/Winter ‘09

February 17, 2009

“Oh No!!! Not the Eighties..,” was my reflex reaction to the 80’s trend percolating back into mainstream fashion a few years ago. And ever since, eighties have been reinvented, refurbished, replayed, season after season. But never before has it been done in the way Marc Jacobs showcased it today. 65 distinct creative croon-worthy looks, donning crazy hairstyles and interesting make up, walked down the runway giving the 80s a pumped up new angle.

Marc Jacobs remembered the 80s as a time “when creative people could afford to live in this city.” He said, “The collection is all about clubbing in the 80’s, when New Yorkers could have fun, be creative. Not like now…”

Accordingly, the powerful personal styles embodied by his models made a lasting statement. Even though 80’s have been done so many times now, there was nothing boring here. The tailoring was impeccable, the silhouette modern yet nostalgic. His creative take on the 80s reminds us fashion is to reinvent. Story Covered by:fab-ulous

ABIGAIL LORICK’S LATEST

February 17, 2009

Designer Abigail Lorick’s Fall 2009 collection proved good manners can still be exceedingly cool. Donning clever hairpieces consisting of simple squares of varying shades of tulle (brilliant), models made the rounds of the stripped-down loft-space to the atmospheric sounds of a solo accordionist. The simplified setting seemed just right, too, for viewing the Gossip Girl-approved designer’s latest exploration of lady-like wares. Once again, Lorick delivered a lot of torso-flattering dresses rooted in ’50s silhouettes, this time in a subdued palette of gray, black, and slate blue. But the Mad Men-ish look had more structure and attitude than prior seasons, as the designer introduced a few new tricks we liked, including drop-waist boyfriend trousers with draped-seam closures and colorful swipes of India in the form of bright red sari fabrics used as scarfs and other unexpected accents.Story Covered by:tfs

Vogue Is Looking For Two Good Assistants To Help Anna Wintour !!

February 17, 2009

According to reports, two of Anna Wintour’s three assistants are leaving soon, and Vogue is looking for two good candidates. The news was shared via email to NY’s savvy media set:

Hi guys,
Sorry for the mass email. Two of the three assistants in Anna Wintour’s office are leaving soon and Conde Nast is starting to look for candidates. If you know of anyone that may be interested in applying have them shoot me an email and I can put them in touch with the right person in HR.

Some experience in fashion or media is good. Smart, well-educated, calm, etc…

Let me know if you can think of anyone.

Thanks!

Three??

We thought she only had two buttgirls (or boys), like in the movie!

How sad is it that our perception of A-Dubs’ reality is guided by the Devil Wears Prada?!

The fight for these two jobs so needs to be captured on tape!Story Covered by:celebdonist

Fall’s Shoes Are Fit to Be Tied

February 17, 2009

Lace-up boots are emerging as the “It” shoe of the season, adding a little tough-girl chic to knits and sheers. Perhaps taking inspiration from Docs (or Demeulemeester’s combats from last fall), designers skipped zippers and instead opted for boots that, let’s face it, are going to be a pain to take off at the end of the night. Costello Tagliapietra showed laced bootees while Rachel Comey’s were perfect for the country. And Alexander Wang opted for a point-toe mid-calf version — cool and a little bit rock and roll.Story Covered by:nymag

Topshop’s New York store to open in spring

February 17, 2009

One flood, one fire, a seven-month delay and $20m later, Sir Philip Green finally felt sufficiently confident today to announce that Topshop’s long-awaited New York flagship store will open on 2 April.

At a press conference in New York, a palpably relieved Green, the CEO of the Arcadia group of which Topshop is the crown jewel, announced that the 30,000 square foot shop will open this spring. Kate Moss, the store’s most successful in-house designer, will be in attendance.

It will be the first store abroad that Topshop will own in its entirety as opposed to being run by a franchise. “Someone once told me that in order to make a small fortune in America you have to start with a big one,” he chortled, referring to the millions of dollars he has already ploughed into the venture - “and that’s just on breakfasts for journalists!”

Fashion Designers Team Up with St. Judes for Charitable Chic

February 17, 2009

Christian Siriano is gearing up for this year’s Design Cares runway show to benefit St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital by collaborating with an unexpected design partner. The Project Runway star has created a stunning gown based on a design by eight-year-old Micah, a St. Jude’s success story, whose stage IV spinal cancer was knocked into remission when she was just a baby. Micha dreams of being a designer when she grows up — and Siriano is giving her the fiercest of head starts by transforming her sketch into a runway reality. Along with Christian, designers including Carolina Herrera, Catherine Malandrino, Diane Von Furstenberg, Vera Wang and Marc Jacobs are contributing their own exclusive gowns, which will walk down the catwalk at a special presentation on April 30th, before being auctioned off at the end of the evening. All proceeds will go toward helping the hospital with its mission of treating sick children in need of care. Click here to learn more about this year’s Design Cares.Story Covered by:peoplestylewatch

Yves Saint Laurent Releases Unisex Collection for New York Fashion Week

February 17, 2009

To coincide with New York Fashion Week, Yves Saint Laurent has released a special limited edition unisex collection. The exclusive fashion range, designed by Stefano Pilati, will only be available this week from YSL’s pop-up shop in The Bowery. The look is inspired by Yves Saint Laurent’s iconic 1960s tuxedos and the 1970s penchant for androgyny. You’ll find wide trousers with wide waists and ankle cuts, sexy trench coats, snuggly cardigans, and ultra-functional handbags.

I’m not sure the man in my life would fancy the collection’s feminine edge, but girls seeking a no-nonsense office look are likely to eat this up. There’s also something so appealing about buying an exclusive range you won’t see on every street corner.

If you love the look you’ll have to be quick. It’s only available from the 55 Great Jones store at The Bowery in New York until February 21. You have been warned!Story Covered by:bagbunch

Karl Lagerfeld Doesn’t Like the Internet

February 17, 2009

When he isn’t dissing Heidi Klum, Karl Lagerfeld is hating on the Internet. NY Mag reports Karl isn’t happy about high-end apparel going online, as he wrote, “I like the physical contact with the goods.”  Karl thinks it’s dangerous for luxury goods to retail online, as he considers it difficult to tell the difference in a product’s quality from the pictures used to sell the product. Moreover, shopping just isn’t as fun: “When you buy in a shop, you buy what you discover, what you might have had no intention of buying.”While Karl’s fears seem legitimate, the fact remains that most of the people who buy Chanel, Fendi, or Karl Lagerfeld products are motivated by the quality they consider inherent to the brand; most Chanel-lovers won’t choose a Forever 21 knock-off, if they’re willing to buy Chanel in the first place. Moreover, those of us who love shopping will continue to hit the stores. We’re just also going to shop the online sales, too.Story Covered by:zimbio
